So who are the Explorers?

Explorer Scouts are teenagers usually aged between fourteen and eighteen years old.

Explorer Scouts make up the fourth Section of the Scouting family. There are many types of Explorer Scout Units, some may be linked to your local Scout Group, others may be based around different activities. Young people can join Explorer Scouts just after their fourteenth birthday. They can move to the next Section, Network, when they are eighteen.

What do the Explorers get up to?

As an Explorer Scout, you will get the chance to work with other Explorer Scouts in your District, not just your Unit. By doing this, you will get the chance to do many more activities, not just the ones your Unit organises.

All Units may not necessarily meet each week, because you will often be out and about at weekends or in the holidays doing activities. There will be times when you will be busy doing other things such as exams, and being an Explorer Scout will have to fit around these.

Explorers are encouraged to lead themselves in deciding the programme and direction of the Unit, with support and guidance from leaders. The section also includes the Young Leaders’ Scheme, where young people are able to take on a leadership role in one of the younger sections.

There is wider scope for activities like offshore sailing, campaigning, performing, parascending, mountaineering and expeditions. Usually Taw Explorers have two or three teams in the infamous Ten Tors challenge. There are also national and international events that Explorers can become involved in. Some are off to Japan in July/August 2015.
